What is a sensor?
One sensor can be used to monitor one thing. I.E. If you need to monitor five pages on a website you will need five sensors. Similiarly if you need to monitor a single page on five different websites you will also need five sensors. One sensor could also be used to monitor one FTP server, one SMTP server or one POP3 server.

Why should I monitor my web site?
If you want to be sure that your web site is on line then you need to monitor it closely. Web servers and internet networks frequently experience problems. You need to know when these problems arise so that you can deal with them efficiently and get you site back online as quickly as possible.

Should I also monitor my email server?
Absolutely. How long does it usually take for you to realise that you are not just having a quiet day, but actually people are desperately trying to contact you while your mail server is down? This happens to all of us (and sometimes quite frequently). PERISCOPE I.T. can monitor your email server and send you SMS alerts if we detect any problems.

My hosting facility / ISP tells me they are monitoring my Web site, why should I use PERISCOPE I.T.?
Quite frequently, the cause of server failure is related to poor/lost connectivity at you hosting facility/ISP. Unfortunately not all hosting facilities will inform you every time they experience connectivity or network problems, so if you want to be sure that you are personally aware of your web sites availability then you need use a monitoring service that is independent of your hosting facility/ISP.
Ideally your organisation should independently monitor its Web site and services to ensure that your hosting partners are meeting their Service Level Agreement.

I monitor my Web site internally, why do I need PERISCOPE I.T.?
Monitoring your web site internally can be unreliable for a number of reasons. If you want to be sure that your site is being tested from the point of view of one of your customers then your web site needs to be monitored by an independent organisation.
The main considerations when monitoring internally are:
- Is it possible that the computer doing the monitoring is not reliable?
- Is it possible that the computer doing the monitoring is not permanently connected to the internet?
- Is it possible that the internet connection that you are using is not reliable?
- Is your web server on the same network as the monitoring server?
- Is the method of notification you are using (email, sms, pager) in any way reliant on the network or internet connections that are used by your web server?
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, you should probably consider employing the services of an external monitoring organisation (even if all we do is monitor your monitor).
