Illinois tops the spam list

2008/07/31

A recent study has revealed that the US state of Illinois receives more spam email than any other state in the country.

The state of Montana was shown to receive the least amount at 77 per cent but Illinois topped the list with 92.1 per cent of all email arriving unsolicited.

Research carried out by MessageLabs showed that, as a nation, the US is receiving an above global average of spam at 86 per cent.

The world-wide figure stands at 81.5 per cent.

Senior anti-spam technologist at MessageLabs Matt Sergeant said: "The varying spam levels can be attributed to different socio-economic factors and levels of security awareness in each state.

"The states that are experiencing higher spam levels may not place as high a priority on IT security, or employees and businesses may be more willing to share their personal contact information in public domains.

"When email addresses are openly available, spammers take advantage of it and inundate those inboxes with massive amounts of spam."

Mr Sergeant said that the research had revealed that those sending the bulk of spam messages were growing evermore shrewd in their attempts to infiltrate spam filtering software and that they were turning to managed services to ensure that more spam is read by its recipients.

There is also evidence to suggest that spam is becoming more intense and being sent to smaller target groups.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18710382-ADNFCR
