Web monitoring gets hack hackers into trouble | | 2008/08/12 | | Three French journalists were ejected from the Black Hat 'Hacking Conference' in Las Vegas recently after using website monitoring to perform their own hacking demonstration which left web security experts embarrassed.
The three computer wizards used web monitoring devices to discover personal log-in details of other journalists which they then took to the operators of the Wall Of Sheep forum - a special debating environment used to shame security experts whose own security or methods are found to be questionable.
However, the forum refused to publish the journalists' findings and instead had them thrown out of the conference despite their claims of attempting to 'educate the press about the value of sending information safely', the Telegraph reports.
One of the journalists' victims, Brian Prince, admitted that he had "been left with egg on my face".
Another said that their action may be proven illegal if there was any violation of Federal wiretapping laws.
The three work for French-based IT publication Global Security Magazine whose sponsorship of the event was terminated. |
