'Bosses should go easy on in-work gamers' | | 2008/06/06 | | Those hard-working employees who can occasionally be found using the internet for some extra-curricular activities should enjoy some slack from their bosses, according to one management expert.
Toby Thompson, a networked learning executive from the Cranfield School of Management believes that managers need to strike a balance in web freedom to keep employees happy and productive.
Mr Thomspon said those workers who choose to play games should no when it is appropriate to stop.
He said: "This balance is crucial, and not just true of internet access. It is the choice of the manager to either make the workplace and working day a dismal grind, or somewhere decent and, dare I say it, maybe even occasionally fun."
A recent reports by PopCap Games revealed that the decline in staff productivity caused by the banning of personal internet use at work could cause British businesses up to £4 billion every year, as spending 10 minutes of free time on the web per day supposedly freshens the minds of employees.
