'Nuisance' smuggled onboard International Space Station | | 2008/08/29 | | Laptop computers used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) to send emails back to Earth have been compromised by a worm virus known as Gammima.AG.
A breach of security has been dismissed by NASA which believes that the virus travelled the 215-mile journey into space by hiding in one of the astronauts' laptops having been introduced via a USB or Flash drive.
NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries admitted that the incident had caused embarrassment but, surprisingly, also said that this type of occurrence was not unheard of.
He told the Mail on Sunday: "It's not a frequent occurrence, but this isn't the first time."
Officials are currently trying to establish who is responsible for the lapse although they were keen to emphasise that there was no cause for concern as essential systems were not affected.
The worm was carried onto the ISS in July and works by stealing login names and passwords for popular online games and then sending them back to a central server in what has been seen by NASA as nothing more than a 'nuisance'. |
