A fifth of Europeans hit by cyber-crime | | 2008/06/10 | | A significant number of European computer users have experienced at least one type of cyber-crime while online, a new report has warned.
The New Media Age has seen a report from Ipsos Mori which showed that 22 per cent of European computer users have been a cyber-crime victim.
According to the report, which was commissioned by AVG Technologies, Italians were most likely to be cyber-crime victims. In total 32 per cent of the population of the southern European nation had been affected.
British computer users followed, with 31 per cent reporting an instance of online crime.
The report said that the high use of online shopping and banking services could be linked to the increase in online criminal activity.
Overall, the research found that Europeans felt they were more likely to suffer from robbery, burglary or assault.
AVG Technologies chief executive J R Smith commented: "It's clear that we still have a considerable amount of work to do to protect computer users against cyber-crime.
"In the space of a few years, the nature of the threat has changed from a sport to professional criminal activity. The challenge for us now is to deliver security with a light touch that does not stifle innovation."
