A Payne asks: Is it everyone or just me? | | 2008/07/09 | | The internet is a place that is perceived as 'always on' and therefore the source of frequent disappointment when the site you want is nowhere to be found, reports the New York Times.
To address the FAQ - "Is my favourite website working today or is it my connection?" 24 year-old internet engineer, Alex Payne devised downforeveryoneorjustme.com which lets visitors find out one way or the other.
A sudden surge of visitors to Mr. Payne's site a little over a month ago began to ask questions of the normally robust Amazon which recently lost more than £705,000 per hour during a multi-hour blackout over two business days recently.
Disappointment seems to be in plentiful supply of late with such usually reliable stalwarts as Yahoo and Research in Motion - the company behind the BlackBerry all suffering from technical problems in the last few months that they could well have done without.
Like any other medium, the web will always be prone to unpredictable behaviour and major sites regularly suffered from teething trouble in the early days. Commenting on the issue, chief executive of Keynote Systems, Umang Gupta, said: "There are millions of websites and these big high-visibility problems are actually very rare."
But perhaps he spoke too soon because last month, Google App Engine, a service that allows the running of interactive web applications, went dark for a prolonged period. Mr Payne was among those who were affected and downforeveryoneorjustme.com went down too in a show of ultimate irony. |
