Apple 'slow to react' over DNS security flaw | | 2008/08/01 | | After what many consider to be too long a wait, Apple has followed the lead of Microsoft and Cisco and released a DNS security patch after a potentially disastrous flaw in the system was discovered last month.
The security patches became necessary after the realisation that the flaw could allow hackers to maliciously divert internet users to erroneous websites even when the correct URL was requested.
Phishing attacks could then be levelled against those web surfers who failed to recognise the fake domains, Macworld reports.
However, the first patches to appear showed symptoms of incompatibility with the system they were designed to protect but even so, Apple has been accused of dragging its heels after an agreement among several big firms that a joint effort should be focussed on the problem.
The flaw was found on July 8th by Dan Kaminsky and was not made public but details about the nature of the flaw were eventually leaked on July 21st which intensified the urgency in finding a solution.
Apple's new security update includes several other fixes and there is an option to download individually or wholly using the "software update" feature in OS X. |
