Australian educational website experiences technical difficulties | | 2010/01/29 | | The Australian federal government's controversial website My School experienced technical difficulties on the first day it went live.
As a result of over 1.5 million people logging onto the website shortly after its launch, the site was stretched to its limit and crashed.
The site allows parents to compare schools in their area with others that are similar, publishing information about every school in Australia.
Following the crash, the site's search engine to find schools by name or location did not work for visitors.
Federal education minister Julia Gillard said: "We know that parents are hungry for this information. This is a website capable of having 1.7 million visitors a day and 2350 hits per second. Demand, even in the very early hours of this morning was more than that."
Ms Gillard said that the experts at her authority did all they could to rectify the problem and there are nine servers backing up the site.
The website for the US representative John Boccieri was also suffering difficulties this week after it was hacked following US president Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
In such instances when the appearance or functionality of a site has changed, website monitoring services help to pick up on the alteration as soon as possible. |
