Banking crisis gives rise 'cybersquatting' speculators | | 2008/09/19 | | 'Cybersquatters' have begun speculating on the domain names of newly-created banking conglomerates, it has emerged today.
Potential domain names for the recently merged LloydsTSB/HBOS bank, among others, are being purchased as anonymous parties seek to cash in on the current financial crisis.
Some are now up for sale on the internet, while other sites display a number of click-through adverts.
Evidence also exists of people gambling on possible future mergers and acquisitions in their domain name purchases.
The potential problems this could cause for the already beleaguered banking sector emphasises the importance of website monitoring and due diligence by firms in every sector to remain ahead of developments in these uncertain times.
"One can't wait until after the deal is announced or the product is launched," said Jonathan Robinson of NetNames, adding that "there are opportunists out there waiting to pounce on any event".
This underlines the importance of businesses managing their domain name portfolios appropriately. |
