Barclays suffers website downtime | | 2009/07/28 | | A hardware glitch prevented Barclays customers from accessing the bank's website yesterday (July 27th).
Website monitoring experts were able to determine that from 9:30 to 14:00 BST, web users were unable to log in to their personal banking accounts.
According to a statement from the company, the downtime was not connected to the redesign of the site, which took place over the weekend.
The problems coincided with an email sent by the bank, informing its clients of the updates to the site and encouraging them to visit it.
During attempts to monitor website downtime, a Barclays spokesperson said: "We had a short-term hardware problem which interrupted service but we are now starting to return to normal," according to the Register.
Earlier this year, a technical fault at Barclays prevented customers from withdrawing money from its ATMs. In addition, the firm's web and telephone services were down across the UK.
Banks may face fines for poor customer service when the Financial Services Authority takes over the voluntary banking code in November, the BBC asserts.
