Berners-Lee supports internet accreditation | | 2008/09/18 | | The inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has pledged his support to a new rating system for websites.
Speaking to the World Wide Web Consortium audience this weekend, Sir Berners-Lee underlined the need to "filter good information from bad" on the internet.
His solution involves establishing the World Wide Web Foundation, which will be tasked with accrediting websites that have useful, honest content.
This could make the process of web service monitoring and safeguarding users online easier.
Mr Berners-Lee told the BBC: "I'm not a fan of giving a website a simple number like an IQ rating because like people they can vary in all kinds of different ways.
"So I'd be interested in different organisations labelling websites in different ways."
Precise details of how the new organisation will implement this plan have yet to be decided.
The World Wide Web Foundation, which has yet to be launched, will also work towards improving internet accessibility in developing nations.
