Broadband price hike in rural blackspots

2008/07/08

A postcode lottery is determining which homes get access to cheaper, more reliable broadband connections.

In a recent report, rural communities are signing up to broadband more quickly than urban centres, but it is the rural areas which are missing out on some of the best deals.

The report by Ofcom claims that there is a disparity in cost and it is likely to become even worse.

Head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, Rob Barnes, said: "Millions of people are penalised for living in these broadband blackspots.

The blackspots - or non-local loop unbundled (LLU) areas - in the more sparsely populated areas of Britain result in households facing extra charges just for living in the wrong post code.

Tiscali's blackspots, by way of example, account for around 12 million households which means an extra outlay of £8 for those wishing to access their deals.

Mr Barnes continued: "With the Ofcom review of BT's Openreach charges due at the end of the year, costs are certain to rise.

"Ofcom should be ensuring that providers accessing wholesale areas are charged a fair amount in order for the provider to then pass on the best value deal to the consumer."ADNFCR-1362-ID-18675414-ADNFCR
