BT accepts outage responsibility | | 2008/06/24 | | BT has accepted responsibility for an internet outage in the Shetland Islands which deprived residents of internet access.
After initially suggesting that the problem could have been due to a fault with users' routers, the telecom company was forced to admit that the outage was caused by an issue at their end.
While it took BT 24 hours to hold its hands up, some villagers and commercial customers were reportedly left without internet access for up to 30 hours.
A spokesman for the firm said that a problem had surfaced due to complications in the telephone exchange.
He commented: "I'm afraid it was the usual suspect which caused the problem, i.e. a fault on the virtual path of the core network between Glasgow and Lerwick."
"Totally unacceptable" was how BT Scotland's head of Scottish affairs Ian Shanks described the inconvenience caused by the outage.
