Business VOIP users 'exposed to risk' | | 2008/09/30 | | The increasing use of unsecured IP telephony software, such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP) applications like Skype, means business users are becoming more vulnerable to security breaches, an expert has warned.
As a new programme designed to identify these flaws is to be launched, called UCSniff, its author has warned that such vulnerabilities exist and firms need to do more to protect themselves.
The problem, according to Jason Ostrom, is the malicious links that can be created as hackers gain access to an IP address and then create links between the telephony networks and otherwise secure stored data.
Unscrupulous internet users gaining access to systems can cause a range of security problems, such as the theft of confidential data and service outages, which underlines the need for effective website monitoring to lessen the effects of this kind of activity.
The increased performance and reliability of the internet and the rising costs of travel have provided further incentives to conduct business over the internet in the last few years.
According to VoIP Monitor, the number of US "establishments" subscribing to services rose by 44.5 per cent in 2008, with more than 2,000 using the technology nationwide. |
