Cable and Wireless Watford site burgled

2008/07/11

Sainsbury's and Ordnance Survey websites went dark at around 01:00 (GMT) today (Friday, July 11th) as a result of an apparent theft of equipment from Cable and Wireless' Watford network site.

Several other major websites such as the Financial Times were also compromised by the intrusion, according to website monitoring services.

A spokesman for Cable and Wireless told the Register: "Cable and Wireless have experienced unforeseen network issues that have regrettably had an effect on a number of our customers.

"We have deployed emergency engineers to investigate the issues and work to restore full service to our customers."

It is thought that thieves had gained entry to an unmanned area away from the data centre and no customer data was found to be tampered with but the company said that it was unable to answer further questions while security checks were being made.

This morning, Sainsbury's website carried an apology message which read: "We are very sorry that you are unable to get access to our groceries site at the moment.

"This is due to a technical problem that our internet providers, Cable and Wireless, are experiencing.

"Our system is working fine, so we will be carrying on delivering all our orders today as usual."

In an update, Cable and Wireless released a statement saying that it had experienced network issues following a break-in at the Watford site and that equipment had been stolen.

Assurances were given that a concerted effort was in place to restore normal service and that an investigation was underway.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18680963-ADNFCR
