Calls made to curb traffic monitoring | | 2008/06/13 | | A US pressure group has urged internet service providers (ISPs) to only target online behavioural advertising at individuals that have given permission.
The Centre for Democracy & Technology (CDT) argues that ISPs should not automatically have the right to analyse the web traffic of people surfing the web, while they should also alert individuals to the practice.
A statement said: "CDT suggests that ISPs engaged in such practices be required to provide unavoidable notice and obtain affirmative, express opt-in consent."
The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) is currently working with industry leaders, regulatory agencies and federal authorities to improve its self-regulatory code, which was introduced in 2000.
CDT claims that the NAI code has fallen behind as a result of "technological evolution"
The statement continued: "We have urged the NAI to revisit its principles to resolve the issues present in the original version and to address emerging issues in the marketplace."
