Canadians campaign for net neutrality | | 2008/06/02 | | The social networking site Facebook was said to be the main organising tool for a protest at Canada's Parliament Hill in support of internet neutrality.
Hundreds of Canadian web users turned out to highlight their concerns that internet service providers (ISP) should treat all content and applications equally.
Among the protestors other grievances was the domination of the Canadian ISP market by two firms - Bell and Rogers - and the provision of broadband for internet users in rural areas of the country.
Michael Geist of the Toronto Star said that the development marks the growing importance of internet-related issues in the political mainstream.
He said: "While it is tempting to view the rally as an anomaly, it is more accurately seen as just the latest in a series of advocacy actions around the world that illustrate both how digital issues are rapidly moving into the policy mainstream and how the Internet can be used to mobilize offline advocacy."
