Canadians given tax extension after website overload | | 2008/05/15 | | An overload on the Canada Revenue Agency's website has led to taxpayers being given an extension to the deadline for filling out their returns.
Users found themselves looking at long delays when trying to send forms using Netfile - some were not able to file returns at all, forcing the agency to put back the final date for delivery.
The problems, often preventable with the use of website load testing services, are thought to have been caused by a 'virtual traffic jam' which ensued when large numbers of Canadians sought to get their tax returns in order at the last minute.
According to the Ottawa Citizen: "The Netfile website slowed down to the point where some web browsers timed out before the CRA home page appeared on the screen."
An unrelated outage last year meant many Canadians were not able to file returns online for eight days.
