CEOP: Children must be protected in online environment | | 2008/05/29 | | Young children should be carefully guided through their first online experiences, according to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.
A spokeswoman for the organisation was responding to figures from Ofcom which show that 60 per cent of families in the UK have internet access that their five to seven-year-olds use.
The representative commented: "Would you let your five year old walk down the road unaccompanied? No, you wouldn't.
Adding: "The internet is a virtual environment where children need guidance and advice on how to keep safe."
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics in 2007 found that 15 million households in the UK have internet access.
Further research from Ofcom shows that two-thirds of British children watch TV, listen to the radio and use the internet without the presence of an adult.
