China corruption website crashes soon after launch | | 2009/07/02 | | Website monitoring services may have been able to minimise disruption to a Chinese corruption website, which crashed shortly after its launch due to high user traffic. The website, set up to allow locals to inform on corrupt officials, was designed to cope with a maximum of 1,000 visitors at any one time, reports the BBC. But shortly after its launch, a rush of visitors far exceeding this number caused the site to collapse. The website was launched by central Chinese authorities to allow people to inform about local-level corruption, which is a massive problem in the country. Reportedly, an earlier version of the tip-off system generated 20,000 reports of official abuse in 2008. China has recently ordered that all new PCs manufactured in the country are installed with the Green Dam filter to prevent users accessing pornographic material. The program is designed to protect children from harmful material, including some related to politically-sensitive issues such as criticisms of a former president.
