China has the most web users | | 2008/07/29 | | Recently released figures have revealed that China now has the biggest army of internet users in the world.
More than 253 million people in China are now online, according to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). The figure leapfrogs the last count made by Nielsen Online which recorded 223 million users in the US.
The US has traditionally recorded the most users which makes this landmark another significant development in a week in which Google revealed there were now more than one trillion websites.
A statement from the monitoring body said: "This is the first time the number has drastically surpassed the United States, becoming the world's number one."
The statement revealed that the figure for 2008 went up 56 per cent in 12 months and analysts are projecting growth to continue at a rate of about 18 per cent every year when 490 million are expected to be online by 2012.
Of these, it is predicted that the vast majority will connect via high-speed links. |
