Cisco and VMware join forces on virtualisation | | 2008/09/17 | | Server virtualisation company Cisco is collaborating with VMware with a new service that will help companies manage data centres more efficiently.
Increases in internet traffic have seen a growth in demand for virtualisation services, which help firms cut energy and equipment costs.
However, this latest service promises to improve the scalability of virtualisation, by using a single server to perform the job of several machines.
This could also increase the demand for UK uptime monitoring services, with several business websites relying on one single server rather than separate ones.
But Theresa Regan, director of operations and infrastructure services for the Massachausetts Institute of Technology, claimed that the collaboration could actually improve network security.
She said: "We are embracing server virtualisation to help us save energy for cooling and to increase the efficiency of our data centre space and resources.
"MIT has a variety of computing needs that require a consistent IT management model throughout our data centre.
"The service, security and operational ease of management policies in Cisco networking will be assignable across each virtual machine in VMware Infrastructure."
