Cloudmark warns email providers of insufficient website monitoring | | 2008/09/09 | | As viruses, and the methods used to deploy them, continue to push back the boundaries of sophistication and abundance, carrier-grade messaging security firm Cloudmark has warned that providers are not doing enough to counter the evolution.
Email users are being placed at risk as hackers are moving beyond traditional attacks such as virally infected files to a mutated form which combines both virus and spam elements.
Web users following malware embedded links could be inviting disastrous consequences for their computers.
Head of technology services at Cloudmark Neil Cook told E-Consultancy: "Companies that fail to address the problem of outdated anti-virus solutions are inadvertently enabling the spread of spambots and botnets.
"Attackers are now merging fraudulent techniques and using next-generation approaches to reach their targets, such as hosting a virus on a website rather than distributing it as an e-mail attachment."
Botnets, where an entire network of computers is infected by the same virus, are believed to be the catalyst responsible for up to 80 per cent of all spam sent. |
