Companies fearful of IM security risk | | 2008/09/16 | | More businesses are expressing concern over the spread of instant messaging (IM) programmes in their offices.
According to InstantOne, a greater number of businesses are concerned over the use of externally-run programmes such as MSN and Yahoo.
Internal systems are much preferred as they are seen to reduce corporate exposure to hackers and other malevolent internet users, while still enabling employees to communicate quickly and easily with colleagues.
Mickael Remond, chief executive officer at ProcessOne, said: "Businesses can be afraid of the security implications [and] we actually did some research on this which showed exactly that. A lot of companies are concerned about the use of IM in a way".
The majority of office employees communicate with their colleagues via their computers, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, whether that is through email, instant messaging or other forms of IT-based correspondence.
Hackers recently got into the Large Hadron Collider at the Cern centre, highlighting the need for good internet security systems.
