Competitive pricing 'healthy for online retail' | | 2008/06/30 | | Competitive pricing is one reason for the ongoing growth of online shopping, according to the director of e-retailing industry body IMRG.
David Smith believes that the power consumers now have to compare prices, coupled with better online marketing strategies has contributed to the marked increase in the number of firms doing business online.
He said: "When retailers are online they have to be very consumer-centric because the consumer has the power now.
"There are a lot of pure-play stores that have grown up online and the only way they can compete against a bigger brand is on price."
Figures released last week by Capgemini and IMRG in their monthly IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show that the equivalent of £731 was spent online for every person in the UK in May.
The sum represents a year-on-year increase of 30 per cent.
