Consumer power renewed by internet | | 2008/06/24 | | The advent of the world wide web is helping restore the rightful place of the adage that 'the customer comes first', according to one expert.
Vincent Potier, managing director of VoIP internet broadband telephone services provider Vonage, believes that the consumer power which was lost over time during the 20th Century is being renewed thanks to the internet.
Mr Potier said the blossoming of the web has seen the customer claw back some ground in the battle against "exploitative corporations".
He commented: "I believe the internet has really contributed to changing all of that.
Continuing: "I believe that the internet, because it is a network and a medium at the same time, has given back that level of autonomy and that level of decision-making power to the consumers."
A survey by Verdict Research found that the amount of money spent by consumers shopping online increased by 35 per cent to £14.7 billion last year.
