Corporate cost of malware revealed | | 2008/10/28 | | The increasing use of Web 2.0 among employees has seen the cost of malware for the largest companies rise to $125,000 per month.
According to FaceTime Communications, repairing the damage caused by malware and dealing with data leakages is on the rise as firms see their employees increasingly using social networking and other Web 2.0 applications.
Vice president of marketing and product management at FaceTime, Frank Cabri, said: "We work with large and mid-size enterprises every day, seeing first hand that Internet applications are brought into the workplace by employees for both work and personal reasons.
"This year's study also reveals their social media habits have extended into the workplace and may be contributing to security and data leakage incidents."
As the internet changes and internet security becomes an ever-more pressing challenge, the use of security controls, including monitoring software, becomes increasingly important.
The term 'Web 2.0' is believed to have been coined when it was used in the name of an O'Reilly Media conferece in 2004, although it has been the subject of much debate as to its meaning and efficacy - not least by Tim Berners-Lee, the man widely credited with creating the internet. |
