Cut optic line causes US outage | | 2008/05/27 | | An internet outage suffered across the Midwest region of the United States last week was caused by construction crews cutting through a major fibre optic line, according to new reports.
Residents and business customers in parts of Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota experienced a slow connection and in some cases a lost service.
ISPs Charter, Berbee and TDS were hit the most. DeAnne Boegli, TDS public relations manager, told Channel 3000: "Many people don't understand the wires run along the interstates and highway systems, so it looks like crews dug a little too deep."
In order to prevent total outages, the companies attempted to reroute some customers along other lines while the problem was addressed.
Companies with customers hit by the outage were not able to give an accurate figure for how many could have been affected and one firm was not even able to post an explanatory message on its own website, such was the extent of the difficulties.
