Data theft by hackers on the increase | | 2008/09/30 | | Incidences of hackers stealing sensitive information from otherwise legitimate websites is on the increase, an expert has claimed.
As the potential financial gain from stealing such data increases the level of activity has risen according to industry professional David Freer.
Talking to retailer PCWorld, Mr Freer said: "The threat landscape is driven by consumer behavior. The exploits focus on Web browser and plug-in vulnerabilities, but attacks based on trickery are emerging as the dominant tactic."
Data theft is only one of the potential threats from unscrupulous internet users, with another being denial of service attacks in which websites are targeted for deliberate outages, highlighting the need for effective website monitoring software to contain and respond to such events.
One of the most recent hacking stories was the revelation that Republic vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's email account had been hacked into, with the contents of some of her emails being distributed on the internet. |
