Default security is not enough | | 2008/07/24 | | Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are being warned against complacency with regard to IT security issues.
Around 33 per cent of companies surveyed by Internet security firm McAfee said that they had been attacked at least four times in the past 36 months.
The report - Does Size Matter? - also found that several of the smaller companies devoted just one hour per week to IT security matters.
Many of the firms surveyed who said they had been subjected to an attack underestimated their own attack-worthiness from the cybercrook's point of view despite losing up to a week's worth of business due to unscrupulous hackers.
Up to 20 per cent of affected UK companies experienced a working week's worth of downtime, reports scmagazineuk.com.
McAfee's senior vice president of the mid-market segment, Darrell Rodenbaugh, said: "Just because a business is small, it doesn't mean it's immune to security threats.
"For businesses of all sizes, viruses, hacker intrusions, spyware and spam can lead to lost or stolen data, computer downtime, decreased productivity, compliance issues, lost sales and even loss of reputation."
He went on to say the belief that default IT security settings provide enough protection is misguided but added that it is also common among SMBs. |
