Developing economies will boost web use | | 2008/08/26 | | New data published by the internet research company JupiterResearch has said that 1.8 billion people will be online by 2012.
According to the company, this figure represents one quarter of the entire world's population who are projected to be regular visitors to the internet showing a jump of 44 per cent from 2007.
The main element of growth will be attributed to the double-digit year-on-year rise in users from countries with developing economies over the next four years.
Even with this impressive growth rate, in 2012 the level of internet use by this core group will still only be equal to that of the US in 2000.
Research director and lead author of the report for JupiterResearch Vikram Sehgal said: "Even though the emerging economies will have lower online penetration rates compared to the developed countries, JupiterResearch believes that they will ramp up the learning curve in adopting sophisticated online activities compared to the developing countries."
China is expected to overtake the US in regular online users by 2011. |
