DNS hole only 'patched in places' | | 2008/08/06 | | The hole in the DNS system is being fixed but too slowly and the full extent of the problem is still not known, according to some experts.
Many fear an open season of viral attacks by hackers unless a comprehensive solution is implemented or web users wake up and bolster their own security and website monitoring arrangements.
Ken Silva is the chief technology officer for VeriSign which administers the .com and .net directories of internet addresses.
He told the New York Times: "It's kind of like saying, 'there's a bunch of money on the street and if you can get over there soon enough, you can get it.'
"It's something the industry is taking seriously but you'd be in a bad place if you weren't doing something about it."
At least one attack is known to have taken place since the bug's discovery nearly a month ago.
Some AT&T customer traffic in Texas was directed to a fake Google site which held programmes that automatically clicked on advertisements, the profits for which went to the enterprising hackers.
The breach however, occurred on a server that was due for removal anyway and AT&T says they have now fixed the problem. |
