Don't annoy the hackers says one researcher | | 2008/08/27 | | Hackers are stooping to a new low by targeting those people who avoid their initial attacks but who then voice their disapproval at the hacker's actions.
According to director of malware research at SecureWorks, Joe Stewart, phishers are launching revenge attacks using the Asprox botnet to strike victims who use the scam's log-in screen to tell the cyber criminals exactly what they think of them.
Hackers then launch a multi-exploit attack kit against those who foil their efforts by using profanity instead of the username or password that the hacker has tried to glean.
Savvy users who know a phishing email or false banking form when they see one have been known to use words such as 'phish' or a broad range of what Mr Stewart called 'bad language' instead of their genuine details.
It is these people who then receive the more concentrated and unwanted attention of a follow-on malware attack, PC Advisor reports.
Mr Stewart said: "The phishers are looking for three things; first, if you don't fill out the form completely.
"Second, if you use the term 'phish' and three, if you use any kind of bad language."
He went on to say that, tempting though it may be to insult a hacker and publicise the fact that you're smarter than they are, there is a real possibility that your actions could come back to haunt you. |
