eBay carries 'fake toolbar' warning

2008/08/26

Web security firm McAfee has warned against the downloading of browser add-ons unless they come from trustworthy sources following the discovery of a bogus toolbar on eBay which could render a user's PC vulnerable to attack if installed.

According to McAfee researchers, a customer had sent the company a sample of the fake toolbar for testing.

Di Tian of McAfee told Web User: "Upon execution, it displays the eBay toolbar end-user license agreement (EULA) and the installation interface, and this program does indeed install the eBay toolbar."

However, during the testing, the toolbar was found to access eBay automatically and create accounts without any warning or notification to the installer and without any action undertaken by the user.

Anyone installing the toolbar could leave themselves wide open to hackers who could remotely access a user's computer using the eBay account name and log-in.

Mr Tian went on: "A successful login suggests the infected machine could be completely controlled by a remote attacker."

However, a full system scan using up-to-date anti-virus and website monitoring services should pick up and remove the infection.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18747816-ADNFCR
