eBay purchase contains millions of bank users details | | 2008/08/29 | | An Oxford man has revealed that a computer he bought on internet auction site eBay for £35 contained sensitive personal details of millions of bank customers.
Information included account details, mobile phone numbers, mothers' maiden names and, in some cases, signatures.
IT manager Andrew Chapman informed the principle company involved - the Royal Bank of Scotland - the moment he realised what he had in his possession.
He told the BBC: "I was appalled when I found the bank account information, that sort of thing shouldn't have been listed on there."
He added that anyone with a fundamental knowledge of computers would have had no trouble in quickly finding the data.
RBS subsidiary NatWest and American Express were also affected. According to RBS, the archiving firm Graphic data told it that the equipment had been "inappropriately sold on via a third party".
All companies involved in the incident have assured that the issue was being pursued as a matter of urgency and were working to resolve the situation.
As Mr Chapman is expected to hand over his purchase, a spokesman for eBay said that the firm would also investigate the matter. He said: "Clearly such details should never have been included in the hard drive of a computer offered for sale on eBay." |
