Efficient new monitoring system developed

2008/09/16

A new anti-virus website monitoring system has been developed that does not "chew up" computer resources.

The Korset program has been designed for the Linux operating system and works by monitoring the behaviour of software already installed on a system.

One of Korset's designers, Professor Avishai Wool of Tel Aviv University, explained that the new monitoring approach makes the system more efficient.

He told Science Daily: "We modified the kernel in the system's operating system so that it monitors and tracks the behaviour of the programs installed on it.

"When we see a deviation, we know for sure there's something bad going on," he added, explaining that the new kernel system stops the program from working before malicious attack takes place.

Meanwhile, a recent article in NewsWeek suggested that consumer anti-virus software can be easily bypassed by determined hackers.

Professor George Ledin of Sonoma State University told the magazine that he has begun teaching his students how to get around anti-virus software so that they know how to cope with a real hacking virus in the future.
