Elderly 'missing out' on internet growth | | 2008/08/29 | | Latest official figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have shown that 1.2 million more households in the UK have internet access than in 2007.
This raises the total number of wired households to 16.5 million representing almost two thirds of UK residencies.
However, there are concerns that those past retirement age have been largely denied encouragement to get online, the BBC reports.
The Help the Aged charity said that the internet can be used as a money-saving device for the elderly and yet around seven million people aged 65 and over had never had an online experience.
Head of policy for the charity David Sinclair said: "Absolutely no progress has been made in getting older people online and the spotlight is now on government and the industry to get switched on."
He went on to say that affordable internet-use courses should be made available to the elderly. "Exclusion from modern society is increasingly less about being able to get to the library and more about being able to access the rivers of information flowing in and out of British homes each day," he added. |
