Ethernet Alliance forms new Data Center subcommittee | | 2008/06/16 | | A new task force has been created by the Ethernet Alliance in an attempt to solve data centre application complications arising from physical-layer and data-link-layer issues.
The new subcommittee will create a "profile" to replicate the ones used by developers as an aid for when they come into contact with numerous standards bodies.
The Ethernet Alliance version will touch on standards involving the IEEE's 802.3 task force and ANSI's T11 group on Fibre Channel Over Ethernet, as well as some protocol work of the Internet Engineering Task Force.
According to Ethernet Alliance chairman Brad Booth, Ethernet Alliance has been prompted to start work on the new framework following the popularity of iSCSI and T11's efforts on the FCoE standard.
Mr Booth said that network architects were particularly keen to see progress being made.
"There's a collective view that developing architectures and applications is much harder now with the advent of virtualisation, IPTV, and applications not really foreseen when Ethernet was a strict LAN technology," he told EE Times. |
