EU asks for security breach disclosures | | 2008/05/29 | | The European Union has asked for obligations to be brought in which would require companies to disclose any security violations they may have suffered.
Under proposed regulations, firms would have to reports any breaches of their computer systems' security to the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).
The move comes after an HSBC server was lost recently, resulting in the misplacement of 159,000 Chinese bank account details.
Executive director of ENISA, Andrea Pirotti, commented: "Europe must take security threats more seriously and invest more resources in NIS [network and information security]."
He added: "Therefore, ENISA calls for the EU to introduce mandatory reporting on security breaches and incidents for business, just as the US has already done."
As part of its mission to safeguard Europe's secure networks, ENISA launched a campaign at the start of the year aiming to improve resilience to public e-communications.
