European mobile internet use surges | | 2008/06/12 | | Soaring demand for 3G services in Europe has helped the region become the largest global market for the mobile technology, according to a new study.
Research commissioned by operator group the GSM Association (GSMA) shows that the number of European 3G users rocketed to 112 million in the year to April this year, while the region's mobile data market is now worth 7 billion (£5.5 billion).
Consumers have flocked to 3G compatible hardware as increasing competition has reduced prices and increased speeds.
Tom Phillips, chief government and regulatory affairs officer of the GSMA, said in a statement: "We expect prices to continue to fall as operators further innovate around tariffs and more and more Europeans use these services as a part of their everyday lives."
