Facebook tightens up security | | 2008/05/12 | | Popular social networking site Facebook has announced a raft of new measures designed to protect its younger users.
Over 40 steps aim to tighten up security including making it harder for older users to contact those under 18 and the banning of sex offenders from using the site.
Also on the agenda is a task force which will be set up to discuss better ways in which to verify users' age and identity.
An agreement was made with the 49 attorneys general across the Atlantic.
Facebook's chief security officer Chris Kelly commented: "The attorneys general have shown great leadership in helping to address the critical issue of Internet safety, and we commend them for continuing to set high standards for all players in the online arena."
MySpace - currently the largest social networking site with 200 million users worldwide - pushed through similar changes to its procedures earlier in the year.
