Fashion and clothing tipped to be e-commerce hits | | 2008/06/26 | | The fashion and clothing sector looks to have the biggest growth potential in the e-commerce market going forward, according to one industry figure.
Davind Smith, director of operations of IMRG, the leading industry body for e-retailing, has discounted the theory that clothes shoppers insist on touching and feeling goods before they buy.
He said: "Now the retailers have realised that all the kinds of fantastic sales that they were seeing through catalogues could actually be replicated online, so that old perception has changed.
"The consumer was quite happy to shop from a distance either over the phone or through a catalogue, but now its just a lot easier to do online."
According to recent figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, online spending rose to £4.5 billion in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 30 per cent.
