Firefox down due to increased traffic | | 2008/06/18 | | The newly released version of Firefox has been plagued with access problems.
Firefox 3.0 was officially launched by Mozilla yesterday (June 17th) but the sheer number of people attempting to download it caused the Firefox website to crash.
While millions were successful, others were left unable to take delivery of the new program.
Around 14,000 downloads took place every minute but normal service did not resume until 10pm.
Despite the problems, Mozilla asserted that the temporary glitch was not a major issue.
Vice president Paul Kim said: "We're thrilled with the response to the release.
"Our systems were quite busy earlier this morning, so individual requests may not have gotten through, but they are all up now and serving a tremendous amount of traffic and downloads."
Mozilla was attempting to create a Guinness World Record for the total number of downloads of a piece of software in a 24 hour period.
After 14 hours, five million people had download Firefox 3.0.
Speaking to ZDNet.co.uk, Mozilla Europe president Tristan Nitot said: "We have exceeded our wildest expectations."
