Firefox gains ground in Battle of Browsers | | 2008/06/03 | | Firefox is said to be making steady progress in its ongoing battle with rival browser Internet Explorer, according to new reports.
Figures show that Firefox is in use by about 40 per cent of internet users, which represents a 20 per cent increase over recent years.
An estimated 55 per cent still use Internet Explorer, but the upcoming release of Firefox 3.0 could win over yet more web surfers and is attempting to break the world record for the number of software downloads in 24 hours on its day of release.
A feature on Mozilla's new browser is set to take some search hits away from the likes of Yahoo and Google.
Larry Greenemeier of the Scientific American revealed: "The browser's new smart location bar (dubbed the "awesome bar" by the company), allows Web surfers to type keywords directly into the address bar to search his or her bookmarks as well as most frequently and recently visited sites."
There are thought to be around 180 million current Firefox users on an international scale.
