Firms 'underestimating' web-based threat | | 2008/11/20 | | Firms are underestimating the dangers of web-based threats, despite a quarter of them having experienced one in the last 12 months, new research has indicated.
A report from security firm Webroot found that the web-based attacks had caused a variety of problems, including server outage.
If the server in question was used to host a company's website and they did not have a website monitoring system, it could have resulted in a large downtime.
The report also found that the internet had more threats than emails, which have been made more of in recent times.
"If you look at the levels of protection, 70 to 99 per cent of companies have already deployed security for email because they've learned, but only a small [number] have deployed the technology to scan their pages for malware," Webroot chief executive Peter Watkins told vnunet.com.
"Around 85 per cent of malware comes in via the web, and businesses have been slow to react to this."
Other companies reported attacks which caused sensitive data to be compromised.
