Firms not up to speed on electronic security | | 2008/09/26 | | A significant number of companies fail to understand the importance of data security, according to a new survey. The research, conducted by IT support firm Logica, found that failure to admit to security breaches was another recurring trend among businesses. Only 40 per cent of companies informed their clients when such events occurred, while over half of respondents claimed security was the remit of the IT department of external contractors, not in-house employees. "This complacent attitude not only increases the likelihood of financial and reputational consequences, but also highlights the inadequate security policies and protocols [in place]," said Tim Best, director of enterprise security solutions at the firm. Security breaches can pose a significant risk to the uptime of servers and websites, underlining the importance of the use of website monitoring software to scrutinize online service. Mr Best adds: Security should not be the sole responsibility of the IT department; it is a boardroom issue and the focus must be to protect the trust that clients have in an organisation." |
