Firms urged to have downtime 'service level agreement' | | 2008/07/24 | | Firms that rely on the internet for their business to function should look to establish a "service level agreement" with their service provider, one expert has claimed.
Server and web site performance monitoring is becoming an increasingly important part of a businesses day-to-day affairs, whether for client, consumer or internal communication.
Ted Bissell, managing consultant at PA Consulting Group, explains that it is important to establish a procedure with providers in the case of downtime.
He told Computer Weekly: "You should discuss about what kinds of outages to expect.
"When suppliers are a problem, you agree an escalation path. You define a series of outage levels, and in the most severe category you end up with a quick level of escalation to senior management."
Meanwhile, Margaret Hopkins, of Analysys Mason, notes that for smaller firms a website monitoring alert need not mean downtime for intra-office as well as client communications.
A satellite, microwave or even a landline connection may be appropriate enough to keep systems in the same building connected.
