Free speech website hacked | | 2009/04/16 | | A free speech website was attacked by internet hackers one day after is started selling controversial cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
The website of the International Free Press Society (IFPS) was selling the Kurt Westergaard cartoon depicting the prophet Mohammed with a bomb in his turban to raise money to support free speech.
Hackers forced closure of the Danish website last week and IFPS set up a temporary site to allow it to continue selling the prints.
Orders continued to flood in while the site was down, with 300 being received during the website outage.
It is not clear whether the IFPS, which was set up earlier this year by the Danish Free Press Society, was taking advantage of website monitoring services.
The cartoons were originally published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005, causing outrage throughout the Muslim world.
At the time, then Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen spoke out in favour of free speech. He is now the secretary general of Nato.
