Free website monitoring software for parents in Florida | | 2008/08/07 | | Martin County Sheriff's office has provided Floridian parents with free website monitoring software.
The move is designed to create a better atmosphere in the household and to offset the likelihood of parental suspicion which will allow technology-loving teenagers to surf in a more uninhibited and relaxed way.
A crime prevention fund set up by the Sheriff's Office has been used to pay for 1,000 CDs which have been supplied by the software firm ComputerCOP.
These computer discs are able to scan all previously accessed text and image files enabling parents to quickly flip through and view each file which, it is hoped, will make responsible surfing the child's obligation.
The discs also contain an in-built dictionary that hosts around 1,000 words which correlate with terms used to describe crimes, sex acts or drugs.
Detective Sergeant Mark Middleton of the Child Abuse Department said that, although the discs represent a great step forward for pro-active parenting, it is by no means a cure-all.
"There is no substitute for parental involvement," he explained.
"This is just one of many tools that can be used." |
